What You Need to Rent a Car in Paphos

Each car has its own requirements regarding the driver's age and experience — these are indicated in the car’s listing. Rental is available for drivers over 21 years old with 1 year of experience, but the widest selection of cars is for those who are at least 26 years old and have 3 years of experience.

What you need to rent a car in Paphos:

  • Passport
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Bank card for making an advance payment on the website

International driving permits are not required for those with licenses issued in:

  • EU countries
  • The United Kingdom
  • Any country with which Cyprus has signed a driver’s license recognition agreement — in this case, you can use your national license for up to 90 days.

The list of countries whose citizens can drive on the island with a national license is regularly updated, so it’s best to check this information before your trip.

Driving Features in Paphos

In Paphos, as throughout Cyprus, driving is on the left side of the road. Drivers usually adapt quickly — roads here are uncongested, except for the city center. Rental cars are marked with red license plates, so local drivers are tolerant of visitors and try to maintain a greater distance.

Road markings are present almost everywhere in Paphos, and signs are standard. Usually, even those driving abroad for the first time face no difficulties. Some things to note:

  1. The speed limit in Paphos is 50 km/h, but be cautious — in some areas, it drops to 30 km/h.
  2. A driver in a car with the engine running is considered a road user. This means they must wear a seatbelt and not hold any foreign objects.
  3. Zigzag road markings prohibit stopping and parking and indicate a nearby pedestrian crossing.

If you notice your wipers raised in your absence — locals do this to express dissatisfaction with your parking, even if you didn’t violate the rules. Make sure you didn’t block a pedestrian path, ramp, store entrance, door, or private territory.

Gas Stations in Paphos

The city has many gas stations, all open 24/7. At night, some stations are unattended, and you’ll need to refuel using a terminal at the pump. Most gas stations have stores where you can buy snacks and coffee.

Parking in Paphos

There are both paid and free parking options in Paphos. Hotels, large stores, and restaurants usually have parking spaces for guests. For long-term parking, it’s better to use covered lots — they typically have fixed prices for 12 or 24 hours.

Paid parking lots have parking meters that mostly accept coins — it’s best to carry some small euro change. To park, get a ticket from the meter and place it on your dashboard.

If you plan to walk around the city center, it’s better to park along Tombs of the Kings Avenue, Agion Anargiron Avenue, or Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue. Finding a spot and navigating the narrow streets may take longer than walking.

In most cases, you’ll easily find a free parking spot, but near beaches and the city center, even paid lots may be full during peak tourist season.

How to Book a Car in Paphos

To find and book a car in Paphos, first select your rental dates and apply the necessary filters — these help personalize your search and exclude unsuitable vehicles. Next:

  1. Select a car, click on it, and review the information in the listing.
  2. Pay attention to the price: the advance, full amount, and deposit (if applicable) are displayed. All available payment methods are also shown.
  3. Fill in details for pickup time and place, main driver, and contact information.
  4. Make a prepayment on the website.

After paying the advance, a voucher will be sent to your email — you must have it with you when picking up the car. On-site, you’ll sign the contract, pay the remaining amount, and receive the keys.

Travel Tips for Paphos

Paphos has many interesting places worth visiting. Here are a few:

  1. Paphos Archaeological Park: An open-air site near the coast, featuring ruins of an ancient city with a temple, fortress, and amphitheater, plus preserved Roman mosaics.
  2. Paphos Archaeological Museum: A great complement to the park visit. It houses artifacts discovered during excavations, some dating back to the Neolithic era.
  3. Tombs of the Kings: A large necropolis with burials dating back to the 4th century BC. The name comes from the luxurious decorations, not because actual kings are buried there. One tomb features the coat of arms of the Ptolemaic dynasty, Egyptian pharaohs of the 4th–1st centuries BC.
  4. Monastery of Saint Neophytos: Located north of Paphos, about 15 minutes by car. Saint Neophytos lived in these caves in the 12th century and carved cells into the rock, which later became a church and eventually a monastery.
  5. Church of Agia Kyriaki: Built on the site of a destroyed early Christian basilica from the 5th century, during the Christianization of the island. The mosaic floor is particularly noteworthy. The church is open daily and still holds services.

Enjoy your holiday in Paphos, and let Localrent take care of your car rental.

Where to Pick Up a Car in Paphos

You can pick up a car at Paphos Airport, at the rental company’s office, or order delivery to your address. Different cars offer different pickup options — some or all of the above.

Which Car to Choose for Rental in Paphos

The choice of rental cars is extensive, and here are a few tips to help you choose:

  1. If you're not planning mountain trips and want to save money — choose a compact model. These cars average 4 liters per 100 km. All fuel on the island is imported and thus expensive, so low consumption will help reduce travel costs. Hybrid models also help save on fuel.
  2. If you want to visit the Troodos Mountains — look for cars with an engine capacity of at least 1.6L. Mountain serpentines can be quite steep.
  3. For a large group, we recommend a minivan — it's cheaper than renting two cars.
  4. There are many scenic spots around Paphos — if you want a photoshoot, rent a convertible. Demand for open-top cars is high in peak season, so it's better to book in advance.

A final, simple but important tip for Paphos: book your car in advance during the high season. You can still book a few days before arrival or on the spot, but your choice will be limited to what's left — usually the most expensive models.

Hello! In order to drive car in Cyprus you need national driving licence (IDL or International Driving Licence is not needed). The only requirement is that information on your national driving licence must have English transcription. Also, please note that most of rental companies require credit card on the driver's name to be used to block the deposit for the rented car. Debit card, credit card on another person's name or credit card without the name are not accepted. The type of card required to rent a specific car you can see in the car's booking form (under the deposit amount). The minimum driver’s age is 25 years. The minimum driving experience is 3 years. If you do not meet these requirements, the rental agent may refuse to provide a vehicle. Drivers who have not reached the specified age, in some cases are able to rent a car, have to issue additional insurance "Young driver". To do this, please contact our client’s support department.
